Is it me, or are the pauses between ‘this’, ‘is’, and ‘American Idol’, are getting longer and longer? Can't be me. Also, do I hear an excuse being thrown out about the sickness of the crew? There is a bad flu going around. I heard the government is considering redoing the flu vaccine. I wonder if it's because of the general population or the AI singers? Hmm. I just hope this mention doesn’t mean that the singers won’t sing well.
Kristi Lee Cook-
Great kick off. She’s got a subtle appeal about her. I said on my TVGuide show Idol Wrap, that I was smitten, and this performance proves why. She seems like a simple country girl that’s comfortable up there on stage. I liked it, but am looking forward to when they get over the actual fear of performing for the first time. I think the judges were a little hard on her…but I’m biased. I’m a sucker for blondes, especially sweet and talented ones.
Joanne Borgella-
Nerves. I feel bad for her cause I’ve been there before, even after singing a full season of Idol. I came back and sang a song that I wasn’t comfortable with on the show, in order to promote my album, and I was a ball of nerves. Joanne os shaking and it shows in her voice. I really like this girl and hope that she makes it through.
Alaina Whittaker-
Young, fun , vibrant girl. This time when they gave her more camera time she used it to show us that she’s sweet, and naturally funny. She gives me a Kelly vibe (personality-wise). For someone so young, a great and centered performance. She really sines and shows off her voice, and does something with the song that really makes it interesting.
I think she’ll be in top 5 if she keeps up this kind of work. I think it’s hilarious that she had never heard that song before…but she is 16.
OK, I’ll say it now. I’m sick of people throwing up Idol gang signs. You know what I’m talking about? It's during the ‘vote for me’ portion of the show. I was guilty of it too. Sadly, I even licked one of the numbers. Sorry, but I wish someone had told me not to. It just looks silly.
Amanda Overmeyer-
I like this girl. I’m not sure that this song showed off her voice, mostly cause she was drown out my by the band. If she were playing the guitar I could see the reason for singing with the guitar runs (scatting). Again I like this girl, and I think that she’s not shy about rocking out to everything. I think the whole performance was a bit violent, but she has the talent, and there’s something about her that makes me want to know more about her. Did her hair get bigger? I don’t mean that in a bad way, just a question. Did I mention that I like this girl? I want her to come back and do more next week.
Watch out for the style changes in your fav’s too. When they get to this round hair magically gets longer and the style is kicked up a notch all around. It’s like a…well, actually it’s exactly like a makeover.

Amy Davis-
Don’t remember her. She seems nice though. Uh oh. Not the greatest start, pitch problems. She looks great though. I want to reiterate that I can’t stand the 60s genre choice for these shows. At least make them mid-tempo, the 60s were groovy weren’t they? Why 60s?
We didn’t have to stick to a genre. We had the opportunity to pick songs that showed off our voices. The fact that the contestants are hemmed in to a genre that they have almost no connection to…other than having to listen to it in the back of their parents car.
Brooke White-
She looks beautiful. Again it looks like she’s trying to make a hum-drum song exciting. It’s not her fault. The song is just plain out of date. She’s trying to sell it though, and I’m happy for it. She should absolutely go through. I love, and don’t love, Brook’s wholesome thing she’s got going on. I think she’s a great role-model…but does she have the killer instinct?
I look at her and think, ‘oh she’s nice, and sweet’, am I going to go and buy nice and sweet? Or do I want nice, sweet, and, compelling? I want to hear a sweet melody about how her heart has been broken…but (without being terse) how she’ll never let it happen again. I want to hear about her walk through a sunny life, but also about some of the more mischievous paths she’s taken or at least thought about taking. That would instantaneously set off an attraction (and I don’t mean that in the sexual sense) to her.
Alexandria Lushington-
I actually really love the original song. It’s so fun, and whacky. I think the intro was great for her. The middle was a little wonky, but she’s a great performer, and engaging. She didn’t yell!! She could of, but like a smart singer she used her head voice. Simon was wrong on that one. He has to take the performance in context of the fact that it’s the first, and it’s the God-awful choice of forced 60s arrangement. She should go through.
Katie Malloy-
Is it just me or does she look like an older, more mature, Alaina Whittaker minus the gap? Just an observation, and not meant to be a negative comment towards either girl.
She looks much healthier than she did in the early auditions, and is beautiful tonight. Another sleepy arrangement. Again it’s not her fault…at least I don’t think so. This song should have ended with Phil Collins remake. Katie has a great voice that was completely covered up by the song. I can’t stand the fact that they chose the 60s. I love the 60s, but not here. Simon was scathing. I don’t think that she was like a pencil by any means. Katie’s male ‘friend’ in the audience looks like he wants to rip Simons face off. I really hope she goes through, and would be surprised if she doesen’t
Asia Epperson-
I met her at the top 24 party, and she’s the cutest little thing you could ever hope to see. She’s 5’0” at best. What a joyous performance. You can see she’s having fun, fighting through the cold or whatever with ease…and stole the rock thunder from Amanda. She’s like a spark plug!! Definitely going through. A lesson to the other contestants…pick uptempo songs wherever you can. I’m a ballad singer by nature and it’s been an uphill climb to write good uptempo songs for myself, and was on the show as well. Asia knocked us dead with her great performance, and was very wise to choose something that would keep the crowd awake.
Remiel Malluby-
Another one that is a cute as a button, and someone that can stick around for a while. Beautiful opening vocal from you. Such a nice smokey, voice. She knows how to sell it to the camera…it’s a fine line between corny and cool (trust me), and she walks the line well. She’s good, very cute, and was conservative, in a good way. She’s going through.
Sayeesha Mercado-
Knows how to handle herself in front of the camera. In the audition footage she has a Beyonce sound. She seems like she knows what she’s doing though. Beautiful girl with a good sound…sounds like Beyonce though. The band is drowning her out though. These two shows aren’t live, think they would have fixed that. She looks a little tired, they need to hit her under the eyes with the makeup. I have the same exact problem. Mediterranean heritage gives you the dark circles under the eyes. Back to the relevant information…I’m happy that she’s doing so well, but I want her to separate herself from another long line of Beyonce impersonators.
Carly Smithson-
I say forget the controversy about having a record deal. So what. there are thousands of artists that get signed every year and thouseands more that get dropped and or forgotten about. She was one of them. Unfortunately for the label she was with, she was the one that got away. I’m not a huge fan of the song…but it does show that she can sing, and sing well. She’s the best vocalist I’ve seen from the girls at this point, but she will have a problem if she continues to yell in order to get the high notes out. She’s young and she’s strong, and she’s got a great shot at having a long career following Idol.
But she will need to find another way to get to the high notes (which are crucial to hit in this show…and often) without grinding her voice.
I really like her, and think that she’ll be top 3. Easily…unless her voice goes. A great plus for her is her lower register. She can be sultry, sexy, and she can rest down there during songs. The other girls don’t have that luxury. Those low notes will make the higer notes seem that much higher. Good on her for having a great instrument to work with. I totally disagree with Simon.
Well that’s my peace for today.
Tomorrow I won’t have to deal with 2.5 hours of footage, so I’ll dish about the wonderful experience this time was for me. Plus reaction on the people (there won’t be surprises…guaranteed) kicked off.

I really thought they were going to have to call security when I saw this guy mad-dogging Simon! lol. Hope he calmed down.

well, I know who got knocked off, because I've seen tonight already in Central time zone. I won't spoil anything, but I will say that you were steered wrong about there not being any group songs at this time. Oh yeah, we had a group song tonight.
I will say one thing, the 1st guy tonight that was kicked off--my husband came through the room and said, 'he's good'; I said he's the one they kicked off; husband said "WHAT!!??" Then he said well I guess he wasn't yelling enough. :)

Wow. It's a good thing you've told us that they have therapists available for the kids because its the first vote off and so many of them were really upset and in tears already.
This looks like a very emotional group and I think the emotional strain is going to play a very big part in the results this season.
I dont know if Remiel has the emotional makeup for this type of thing.
Simon was way out of line cruel in his comments to one of the departing contestants. There was no need to embarrass the kid like that and rub salt in the wound.
I find this to be a really big turn off and if it continues like this, I may have to bow out of watching this season. I dont want to watch kids being treated so meanly like that. Poor kid. I felt like I needed to borrow their therapist.
You're right Justin, only the really strong race horses, bred for this kind of thing, are going to make it to the end.
I look forward to hearing how YOU handled all the stress, and if you dont mind, on a lighter note, could you please let us know what coverup you use for the undereye circles, cause you always look gorgeous. Ill buy what youre wearing! lol

boy justin your blog site is busy again, but this time i've learned to only post once even if it say's too busy. lol
love your recap and the show is over here in west coast time, so i'll post about who left. justin you mentioned Joanne and her nerves and i did like Joanne and i liked her voice and song she did. i wish her nerves did not get the best of her because i felt she really had great potential. it's got to be very scary for these kids once they get to this point in the show. i'm sad she got the boot, but simon was way to hard on her she was better then many of the other female singers that night. simon clearly has an agenda on who he wants in the top 12 ! what do you think justin? does simon try to control who makes the top 12 ? it always seems that way.
that girl brooke is good and she reminds me of Carly simon. i think brooke is the one with the blonde curly hair. it's all a blur and the girls need to stand out more in their own style, i really am confusing them and non are standing out for me right now. maybe next week!
that guy who got kicked off that Garett dude, he has some star quality going on and his voice is good even though it was quiet on that song. i don't think we have heard that last of him and all he needs is a hit song and a make over like Elliott yasmin had. lol Simon was wrong to bash Garett and Joanne that much, he set them up to get the boot. i really think Simon is wrong a lot and whatever his agenda is for the show and for RCA clive davis it seems very obvious there is an Agenda! As Fantasia said in People magazine photo group picture with Clive davis, Fantasia is quoted as saying Clive is Gangsta !! i think she has it right !
Justin...what do you think of Simon's new hair style ? you can Tee off a Golf ball on his Hair peice the way it's cut on top. i sent that comment to Ryan seacrest radio show. what is up with his hair Justin ? it almost looks like a divit you get after hitting a golf shot..i guess we are spoiled Justin with your great hair !

In my opinion, Carly is talented but the incessant pimping and trying to defer everyone from the fact that she had a contract years ago is taking away from her performances. Let her performances speak for her and let America decide if they want to vote for her. This week, I think the girls displayed more talent than the guys but it is a toss up as to who will win. As in past seasons, some folks do well now but lose their luster over the course of the season. I enjoy your assessments and look forward to reading your blogs each week. I still don't believe this is the" most talented top 24 " ever, no matter what the judges say.

The girls started slowly and then were building up steam when Carly brought a show that cruising in for a smooth landing to a screeching halt. She was a train wreck for me. Ouch, ouch, my poor ears. She can't hit the bricks soon enough for me. I will give her one more listen, and then will probably watch the show with remote in hand.
But, I do agree with you that she will probably be in the top three; this is Idol.
Ramiele was awesome. Loved her performance.

Justin,
Great job on the girls! Lots of thoughtful insight. What do you think of David Archuletta?
