Recap: Harsh Words From The Judges

Just because we’re still early in the competition doesn’t mean the judges are going to go easy on anybody. Week 3 of 'Dancing with the Stars' found the judges stomping on some egos.

So much so that Steve Guttenberg donned some protective armor--a pan and goggles--leaving Tom Bergeron to call him “Our Little Pothead.” Take from that what you will.

Alas, he came, he charmed, he didn’t conquer.

His tango garnered Guttenberg his best scores yet--21--but it wasn’t a lucky number for The Gute, who became the third contestant booted from the show.

I’ll miss him…and his delusional optimism: “‘Dancing with the Stars’ makes the world a better place! It’s made me a better person!”

Highlights of the Results show:

--The Mango: Steve and Jonathan performed a man-on-man tango when The Gute's partner Anna got sick. (I think she's the worst pro female partner...can we blame Steve's early dismissal on her???)

--Fierce hot tranny mess Kylie Minogue performed, as did an Alvin Ailey dance troupe

--The stars put on an ‘April’s Fool’ bit about their hobbies, such as Cristian's an otter trainer; Yamaguchi’s also a champion hot dog eater; and Priscilla has a psychic hotline.

--Also notable: Despite reports he was taken to the hospital, Derek Hough looked just hunky-dory next to partner Shannon Elizabeth all night.

Week 3 Performances

Frontrunners Falter: Mario and Jason Taylor were knocked down a peg. Len was 'bitterly disappointed' by Mario and he made some confusing comment about Jason and featherdusters (huh?) But I thought Jason was great (scoring a 23) with his cool version of the jive and his smokin' grey untied suit. And I didn't think Mario was nearly as disastrous as the judges claimed--a 21, seriously?
Surging Ahead: Shannon 'Legs' Elizabeth left the audience, the judges--and herself--breathless, pulling a 24 (but no 9's?). Cristian rebounded with a flashy jive that got him a 25. Cougarliscious Priscilla Presley nailed the tango for a 26.

Falling Behind: Marlee did well enough, though the jive gave her some trouble for a score of 21. Marissa had the wind knocked out of her sails for her jive (a 19), a dance you'd think the Mexican Jumping Bean would have mastered: 'It was boring,' 'too careful,' 'it looked like rehearsal.'

The Dark Horse: Adam Carolla continues to ride Julianne’s popularity coattails. And just as he deceives you on the dance floor into thinking he might not be so bad after all…he opens his mouth. He tangoed a 21.

Still Wowing the Crowd: Kristi remains the leader of the pack with three straight 9's, three dances in a row. Unless someone brings in Tonya Harding, she looks unstoppable.

What did you think? Should The Gute have been cut so soon? Were the judges right on about Mario and Jason? And is Adam Carolla funny or annoying?
