The latest episode of Lost opens with the Oceanic six plus Aaron on a plane, waiting for a landing. They don’t look happy. In fact, they look terrible. They have agreed not to talk to reporters. Jack reminds them that they all know the story and that if they don’t answer something people will just assume they are in shock. Sun tells Jack that they are in shock. The plane lands. Hurley’s parents, jack’s mom, and Sun’s parents are there to greet them. Kate and Sayid have nobody.

Overall this was a solid episode of Lost. As audience members we are used to this kind of transitional episode. No new big mysteries are presented. Some questions are answered. A few storylines are brought to a close, but mostly this kind of episode serves as a set-up to what will follow, in this case the two hour season finale in two weeks.

At the beach, the campers are wondering about the tracker that mysteriously fell from the copter. They let Daniel use it. He dials one way, so that they can hear what is happening on the copter. Keamy is heard telling Frank to put the copter down at the orchid. Jack leaves to go after them. Juliet doesn’t want him to because of his recent operation. He tells her once again, “I promised these people I would get them off the island.” How many times is Jack going to repeat his promise? More importantly, why will he break this promise, which means so much to him that he is willing to constantly risk his life to complete it?

Daniel takes Charlotte aside and tells her they have to get off the island. If Keamy is going to the orchid, it means he is carrying out the secondary protocol. Jack and Kate are following the chopper. Jack is tired. He is bleeding. Kate calls him on this, and he looks her right in the eyes and lies that he is not bleeding. She calls him out. They bump into Miles, Sawyer, and Aaron. Sawyer gives them a recap of what went down on his end, and almost gets into a fight with Jack. Kate takes Aaron. Heads to go off and find the Orchid. Sawyer calls after him, “Hold up, you don’t get to die alone.” Last week I noted a few callbacks to the pilot and mused that they were meant to hint that Lost is leaving one story behind and is about to embark on a new one. Well, in the pilot Jack says that if they don’t learn to live together, they’ll die alone. Dying alone is starting to sound appealing.

In the future, the oceanic six are at a press conference listening to a BS story about how they got off the island on a raft- on day 108 none the less, how they were transferred by chopper to Honolulu (ironic, since the show’s filmed in Hawaii.) They are questioned. Sun says her husband never made it off the plane. Kate says she was five months pregnant when captured by the marshal. Sayid is asked if there could have been other survivors. He says no. Outside, Sayid is reunited with Nadia. Sad, since we all know what’s going to happen to her.

Sayid is making his way by boat to the camp. He wants to bring everybody back. Juliet says that Jack and Kate went after the chopper. Ben, Locke, and Hurley are also on their way to the orchid, which Ben describes as a greenhouse, in order to move the island. Ben uses a mirror to signal to somebody- he will not tell Locke who, and won’t tell him what they said. My best guess would be he is talking to Richard, although the two may have been having problems.

At camp, Sayid lets Daniel ferry the campers to the Freighter. He takes them six at a time. Kate, just having returned to camp, offers to go with Sayid to find Jack. She is an expert tracker, and Sayid will make better time with her along. She gives Aaron to Sun before leaving. Sun, Aaron, Jin, and others take the first trip. In the future, Sun’s dad is arguing with some people about Money. He asks Sun about the baby. She tells him that she knows he doesn’t care, and that she has used her settlement to buy a controlling share in her father’s company in order to get back at him for ruining Jin’s life. I guess we know the next installment of Sun’s story.

Hurley returns to his mansion. There is a coconut on the floor. He hears Island-whispering. He picks up a statue of Jesus in order to use it as a weapon, and bursts into a surprise birthday party. All of the six are there except for Jack. Hurley’s dad gives him the car- yeah, that one. He had been fixing it up. Hurley steps inside, and the speedometer has those infernal numbers, 4815162342. Hurley freaks and runs. Jack and Sawyer arrive at the chopper. Frank is handcuffed. He promises to fly them off, and tells them that Keamy is going to get Ben and it won’t be good for anyone with him. Sawyer tells Jack that Hurley is with Ben. So, they have to go after them. Notice Sawyer isn’t at all concerned about Locke.

Jack gives a eulogy for his father. Afterwards he meets Claire’s mom, who tells him that Claire is his sister. I just have to say this scene was so good. Even though we know exactly what is coming, it still shocks us, just because we know how uncanny it must be for Jack. On the freighter Desmond calls Michael into a room- it is completely covered with C4 explosives. The others, lead by Richard, ambush Sayid and Kate. This scene actually made me wonder. Most of the others are dead. Either there are a bunch of others we don’t know about, or this is an entirely new group. Ben gives Locke instructions of how to get underground into the Orchid station. He says he has a plan, and then lets himself be captured by Keamy.
